I went to the cinema with my mom on Saturday and watched the Norwegian movie “Engelen”. It is based the story of a friend of the director (Margreth Olin) who grows up with a violent and alcoholic step dad and later gets drug problems herself. The movie show how a child can be spoiled when the parents don’t see it and it’s needs. It shows what can happen when the child become the parent for the parents and how much the childhood affect a person and shapes one’s life. I found it a very good movie which gave me a lot of thoughts and reflections about our society here in Norway. The welfare system which my international friends from developing countries see as some kind of Utopia when they arrive, but gradually realize that they got it wrong. They notice the people who has “fallen out” of the society: The beggars, the prostitutes, the refugees, the drug addicts, the alcoholics. They find that Norway is not as welcoming as they thought when they start to search for jobs. Because even though Norway is supposed to be the best country to live in in the world, people are still not treated equally. Basic Human Rights are still violated.
I hope that people become aware of this. I hope that we can open our hearts to other people and see everybody around us. We can support people in our own society. We can be fellow human beings and stretch out a helping hand, also in our local environment. There are thousands of children who are not seen, there are thousands of people who are lonely, there are thousands of people who needs a hand. Open your eyes and see the world around you.
Margreth Olin might be someone who can inspire you. At least she inspired me. She calls herself a “documentarist” who tells other’s stories to the public. She has made several documentaries and written many articles about our society, our neighborhoods.
